The two bonded while providing a music program at the Santa Anita Racetrack in Los Angeles, which served as the largest "assembly center" during 1942. Housing some 19,000 individuals, conditions were widely deplored. Watanabe contrasts her experiences at Santa Anita with her immediate impressions of Granada.
